1.2 - Cyber Security Incidents

Cyber Security incidents can occur in many different forms.

Unauthorised Access

This type of incident means that an attacker has gained access to data / a computer system / a network without permission.

Another type of unauthorised access is escalation of privileges.

Hacking is the most common type of unauthorised access.

A hacker achieves access without valid credentials (e.g. without a username and password).

Vertical escalation means that an intruder has gained entry to a low-level access account but exploits security flaws to gain further, higher-level access.

Horizontal escalation means that an intruder has gained entry to a low-level access account and exploits security flaws to gain access to similar accounts.
